Looking at the moon

Her name comes from the tsukiyo no usagi legend, a.k.a. rabbit on the moon. Do I need to recount the tale to get full credit? :)

That's a common misconception. THe tale you weave is the justification, but not the reason. The reason Sailor Moon is named Usagi is because the following conversation once took place betweem Naoko Takeuchi and Fumio Osano.

For the sake of those who speak no Japanese I have translated the entire conversation into American English.

Oh.. and the following is really blasphemous material for Sailor Moon fans. Proceed at your own risk.

Naoko Takeuchi- Hey, Fuimo!

Fumio Osano- Naoko! What's up bitch?

Naoko- Not much. Just workin' on this Sailor Moon thing.

Fumio- You ain't done with that shit yet? I told you I wanted it on my desk yesterday!

Naoko- Well, I'm really just stuck on one point. I have no idea what to call the main character.

Fumio- Isn't she called Sailor Moon?

Naoko- Well yeah, but I mean her Clark Kent name.

Fumio- What?

Naoko- You know, how Superman is really Clark Kent or Batman is actually Bruce Wayne.

Fumio- Oh you mean like we did with Codename: Sailor V. She was actually Minako Aino or some shit like that?

Naoko- Yeah...

Fumio- You spent a lot of time picking that name, and frankly... well Frankly I'm a little disapointed.

Naoko- It's not like your idea was any better.

Fumio- What? Bunny? Bunny was a great name!

Naoko- Look.. I was willing to have her fight evil in a sailor outfit.. I know you were pretty insistant on that, but I wasn't about to call her Bunny. It'd be like some stripper's name.

Fumio- And I really don't see where the problem is. We could have gne that extra mile and had a really great Hentai show on our hands to make Keiko Kamen blush.

Naoko- I'm trying to create someting beautiful here and you always screw it up.

Fumio- Trust me on thi sone. Keep the Sailor outifts and call her Bunny. Since she's Sailor moon we'll tell people that we're trying to pun on the Rabbit on the Moon thing.

Naoko- They'll never buy it... Bunny is a really stupid name.

Fumio- Let's make a deal.. call her Bunny. If the show flops I'll owe you dinner... if the show succeeds you'll add lesbians and crossdressers in later editions.

Naoko- Lesbians?

Fumio- If I'm right you'll see that having lesbians dress up in sailor outfits beating up badguys would work just as well as having a ditzy blonde named "bunny" dress up in a sailor uniform and fight bad guys.

Naoko- Whatever. Just get off my back. I'll tell you up front though... I'm against this. The only place I can see naming your female role model "bunny" would fly is in America.

Fumio- Yeah, and they'd likely change it to something stupid like Serena or something.

Naoko- Ooo Serena... I really like that name.

Fumio- Tough. It's Bunny or nothing.
